AISI-COFS JHU Field Trip - September 10, 2007
Note: This page provides logistical information and supporting material for an AISI-COFS field trip to JHU to discuss related research projects. The field trip is scheduled for 10 September 2007.
Logistics Parking and campus map (park in the new garage underneath the Decker Quadrangle, big "P" on the map. Walk over to Latrobe Hall, column D/E row 3 on the map) Directions (once you reach Wyman Park Drive follow the map and enter the new garage, denoted as #11 and with a P on the map - current online directions end you at a different parking lot...) Notes The meeting will start at 2pm in Latrobe Hall room 106 The meeting room has wireless internet for those who cannot resist Ben's phone is 410 516 7801 office, 202 321 7730 cell, if problems/questions
Presentation slides A draft of the slides to be presented at the meeting is available: download. Annotated version of the slides as presented: download
Schedule (times approximate) The meeting will be held in Latrobe Hall room 106
1:15-1:30 leave hotel and head to JHU - coordinate amongst yourself at hotel
2:00 Introduction to... Rotational restraint of sheathing project (focus) Direct Strength Method for members with holes (brief intro) Sheathing braced design of wall studs (very brief intro) 2:30 Lab trip #1 (to the basement!) Rotational restraint test with OSB sheathing Intermediate length column test (no holes) 3:30 Design method for.. Predicting rotational restraint. How best to provide in standards? / supporting work needed for engineers? 4:00 Lab trip #2 Rotational restraint test with gypsum sheathing Intermediate length column test (holes) Rotational restraint test with high humidity gypsum sheathing <Short break, then...> 5:00 Sheathed studs (new project) Overview of project RFP, and proposal response Initial thoughts on behavior and history of research in this area Discussion of scope and goals 6:00 Wrap-up
~7 Dinner Dinner Is on your own; however Ben will be staying in Baltimore for dinner and is happy to continue discussions about the research with those who are interested. Perhaps we can figure out dinner plans before the 5pm discussion begins so that we will know numbers and can make some phone calls, reservations, etc. (Monday night... means some restaurants will be closed)
Supporting Materials
Experiments on Rotational Restraint of Sheathing (AISI-COFS Gift) This project provides experimental work quantifying the rotational restraint that sheathing provides to cold-formed steel joists (or studs) for partial or full restriction of the distortional buckling limit state. Proposed Work (pdf) - Fall 2006 Project Final Report (pdf) - July 2007 ICTWS Conference Paper (pdf) - August 2007 Note the experiments detailed in this work will be demonstrated on the field trip.
Direct Strength Method for Members with Holes (AISI-COS Project) This project examines the extension of the Direct Strength Method of design to members with holes. Proposal (word) Progress report 1 (report) (condensed presentation) (full presentation) - Feb 2006 Progress report 2 (report) (presentation) - July 2006 Progress report 3 (report) (presentation) (supp. NSF presentation) - Feb 2007 Progress report 4 (report) (presentation) - July 2007 Note progress report 3 and 4 include details of column experiments that will be demonstrated on the field trip.
Sheathing braced design of wall studs (AISI-COFS Project) 2002 Specialty Conference Paper on Sheathed Wall Studs (pdf) AISI-COFS Request for Proposals (pdf) Proposal (pdf) Proposal addendum (pdf) Structural drawings of MDOF testing frame (pdf) Note the testing frame for this project is under construction and we will not be able to demonstrate a test yet (apologies) however the scope and goals of this project will be discussed as will any other details of interest to the attendees.
