Bay Shore Amusement Park

For most of the first half of this century, Baltimorians could escape summer in the city at the Bay Shore Amusement Park. Built in 1906 in Black Marsh, an undeveloped area along the Chesapeake, by the united Railway and Electric Company, it sat across Old Road Bay from the Bethlehem Steel Plant. A man made beach and pier allowed the crowds to enjoy the Chesapeake, and there was even a trolley service between the city and the park. In 1947 it closed. The land is now part of North Point State Park. Following the trails through the fresh water marsh, where there is an abundance of birds and plant life, one can still come across the remains of the old park. The central fountain and trolley barn have been restored and part of the beach and the concrete pier have survived. The park’s visor’s center features a museum with pictures of the Bay Shore Amusement Park in its heyday.
