Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Situated on 18 acres of waterfront the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is the only museum dedicated to preserving the culture and heritage of the Bay. Located in St. Michael's, the birthplace of the Baltimore clipper ships, it boasts the largest collection of Chesapeake boats in existence. The exhibits take visitors through the evolution of the Bay's watercraft, from the Native American log canoes to the internal combustion engine. There is a reconstructed Clipper ship, a working steam engine demonstration, a reconstructed machine shop, and a working boat yard. Another museum highlight is the Hooper Strait light house. Built in 1879 and moved to the museum in 1966 its iron pilings once screwed into the floor of the Bay. The museum also features exhibits on the area's history, waterfowl decoys, and Chesapeake Bay crafts. The surrounding town offers historic buildings, bed and breakfasts, and frequent festivals.
