Jerusalem Mill

In 1772 the Jerusalem Mill was built outside Baltimore on the Gunpowder River. Using a rare vertical shaft mill design its horizontal water wheel turned an upright shaft to power the machinery in the floors above. It grew to become on of the largest mills in Maryland and helped to make Baltimore one of the leading milling centers in the country. The wood columns and beams are the forerunners to modern building design. The craftsmanship that went into its construction helped it survive two hundred years. After the mill closed it was used as a community center, a store, and an office building. It now stands in Gunpowder Falls State Park.
