Enoch Pratt Free Library, Maryland Section

For those who do not know, the Enoch Pratt Free Libraries are the public libraries of Baltimore City. Located on the second floor of the main branch, the Maryland section is a god-send for anyone needing information on Maryland. They have county histories, church records, genealogical information, legal forms, guide books, and an extensive African American collection.

  • Vertical File - located in the large filing cabinets, these contain manila folders on almost any imaginable topic. Most newspaper/magazine articles, brochures, company pamphlets, and opening ceremony booklets came from here. These are not in circulation and so must be worked on there.
  • Query index - located in the card catalogs this index tells where to find more information on almost any subject.
  • Periodical catalogs - Most Maryland published magazines can be found here. They are generally kept in the back and brought out by the librarians in large bound volumes. Some are not indexed, so if you don't have a specific article in mind, these may not be a good idea.
  • The Pratt Library index is online at www.pratt.lib.md.us/. The Central Branch is located in downtown Baltimore at 400 Cathedral St. (near Mt. Vernon Place) and can be reached by telephone at 410-396-5430.

Milton S. Eisenhower Library, Johns Hopkins University

Located on the Homewood campus, the Eisenhower Library has an extensive Government Publications department, located on A level. Many National Park booklets sited came from here. The AV room of the library, also on A level, has The Baltimore Sun from the past hundred years, on microfiche, but not indexed. More information on the library, including its index, can be found at http://milton.mse.jhu.edu:8001/milton.html.
