| While houses do move due to temperature and humidity
variations as well as the effects of external loading, it was considered worthwhile to
instrument the house with strain gauges enabling the inference of structural loads in
members. Twenty gauges (Manufactured by measurements group) have been installed on the
metal rafters and studs in the initial study area. There are plans to instrument some of
the wood roof trusses as well. A linear
potentiometer has been installed along the north wall of the structure. This device
measures structural displacement during extreme wind events. Eventually, additional
displacement transducers may be installed in other locations within the Pitts Center.

were also installed on the studs of
the second-floor, southeast room.
