Formerly referred to as the EIT exam, the FE is used as a first step in professional licensing. It was developed to evaluate fundamental knowledge of mathematics, applied science, and engineering principles. Questions are prepared by a group of volunteers consisting of both engineering educators and practitioners.

The exam consists of two four-hour sessions. The morning session is a multiple-choice, 124 questions exam covering chemistry, computers, dynamics, electrical circuits, engineering economics, ethics, fluid mechanics, materials science, mechanics of materials, mathematics, statics, and thermodynamics. The afternoon session is a multiple-choice, 60 question exam which covers one of the following topics: chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, general engineering, industrial engineering, or mechanical engineering.

It is recommended that students take the FE exam before graduating, as the average pass rate for enrolled students is 75%, compared to only 52% for those taking the test up to two years after graduating. This exam also reduces the work-time requirement before becoming eligible to sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam (four years vs. eight years for those who have not taken the FE).
