We are pleased to announce that Civil Engineering Associate Professor James Guest is the recipient of the 2015 EMI Leonardo da Vinci Award. The award, created in 2011 by the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), recognizes outstanding young investigators early in their careers for promising groundbreaking developments in the field of Engineering Mechanics and Mechanical Sciences, as relevant to Civil Engineering.

The award is given every year to a young investigator, generally below the age of 35 , whose contributions have the promise to define new directions in theory and application of Engineering Mechanics, in the vein of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), a man of unquenchable curiosity and feverishly inventive imagination. 

Professor Guest was selected by EMI for his pioneering research in the development and implementation of topology optimization methods. It was felt that this research has been and will continue to be a tremendous asset to engineering design, particularly in the deployment of rapidly advancing technologies to control structural and material configurations never before addressed.

Professor Guest will be presented the award at the EMI 2015 Conference.
